Ooof. Wow. Yum. Yay. Oyeh. Finishing the Ted Lasso season 3 finale, I'm prompted to write. I haven't been inspired by anything enough to do so for a while. But despite the season bowling me over I'm not sure the finale did. There was too much wrapping up of stories going on? Beautiful, tearful, nostalgic, wonderful wrap-ups but. ;)
I can't get over that the team performed the Sound of Music farewell song!! Hahaha! I can't get over how aggressive and competitive Rojas was when he played for Mexico! What a contrast! Hahaha! I can't get over how honest Ted was with his mom, to the point of using "Fuck you" to start various sentences. Amazing. We need to start being that honest to our loved ones. (but obviously in kind, respectful ways like Ted :) I can't get over the Amsterdam episode, so much big stuff happened for so many characters. ❤ I especially loved the thoughtful conversation between Colin and Trent about coming out as gay. And finally I can't get over how open-ended the series ended and there's no confirmation of the show continuing!!! AAAHHHHHHH!!! ;P
But I gotta remember that kind of open-ended finale can be perfect. One of my favourite shows of all time, Black Sails (blog post here), did that. And so I had joined the discussion on Twitter about the Black Sails finale. And after reading one person's mini-essay, I realized how right-on that open ending was. That you chose which ending to believe, that it was a reflection of you, the viewer. I feel this applies here. Nothing they showed us in the denouement and montage was decisive. It didn't close any doors. :)
And I can't celebrate enough that the show showed men crying so often, feeling so much, sometimes hurting, and showing it. I cried along with all their moments, my heart broke for all the characters, watching their faces fall, or light up in joy. At the end of some episodes I was just crying as a release from the emotional roller coaster. Phew.
Beautiful, beautiful show. I wasn't sure if season 3 could continue being as great as the first seasons but it sooooo did! And I love that Jason Sudeikis always had a 3 season arc in mind and didn't waver from it. I feel that's sometimes the weakest aspects of some modern shows, a rambling, soap-opera-like story line. Compact and complete is always a more powerful story!
